Jan Rozman and Julia Keren Turbahn: THINGS THING

2021

I never knew a thing could do so much. I never thought it was possible, but now I’m getting in touch? What can I do and can the sponge do it too? There are so many things that make me feel yellow and blue.

What things surround us? What can you do with things? And more importantly: what can things do with us? Can things actually think? Do thoughts have a thing? Do they thing?
With THINGS THING, Jan Rozman and Julia Keren Turbahn invite you into an overflowing world of things. Into a world of possibilities, in which they encounter things and things encounter them in different ways. Is that your thing? Then be part of it: in a playful performance, Jan and Julia leave room for interpretation, discovery and encounter, and invite everyone from the age of five to thing together.

The work is produced by Emanat Institute from Slovenia, co-produced by Ljubljana Puppet Theatre and made in cooperation with FELD Theater für junges Publikum from Berlin. Performance is suitable for children of age 5+.

The performance in an imaginary stage design at the intersection of object theater and contemporary dance establishes a meeting place between a wide variety of objects and the human body. The stage becomes a polygon of playful exploration, where instead of words, stage actions, based on recognizable ideas and open to various connections and emphasis of the audience, speak. Through clearly structured chapters, the artists examine the forms, movement and associations triggered by objects, and examine the similarities, differences and relationships between humans and the things that surround us. Things thing from the everyday environment sparkly draws the creative possibilities of this relationship and supports the imagination regarding the ways in which we look at and perceive the life of the object, and imply consideration of the coexistence of man and the material. - Nika Arhar, Adriana Gaberščik and Martina Peštaj
23.07.2021, Golden Wand Award of quality performances for children and youth (Zlata paličica)

The show playfully encourages us to think about the excessive (non)use of plastic objects around us. Objects that at one moment seem indispensable to us can eventually turn into a gigantic monster that threatens the existence of life on our planet. - Zala Dobovšek, Špela Čadež and Marek Waszkiel
11.09.2021, Special jury award for playful criticism of (un)useful plastic objects at the 11th Biennial of Pupperty Artists of Slovenia

13.4.2022, THINGS THING project poster was selected for the exhibition of Brumen Foundation's 10th Biennial of design.

12.10.2022, THINGS THING was selected among the 15 best children's/youth performances in Germany - Festival AUGENBLICK MAL! 2023!

Rewievs

The play Things thing prompts us to reflect on the relationships between matter, things and people, and is thus placed in the modern and increasingly acute and topical consideration of the roles of people on this planet. Keren Turbahn and Rozman approach this thematic field to the audience in a non-patronizing way, with a good amount of humor and mischievousness. They do not rely on a didactic text, but trust in the power of the visual-kinesthetic moments of this performance.
