After creating a solo What If (2013) and having been part of the Image Snatchers collective for the past years, Maja Delak goes on to choreograph a pentagram with performers from different generations. The new production is a seemingly slow-moving instant composition intentionally crafted to bring to view the less visible, less conspicuous materialities, embodiments, physical states. The starting point for this elusive fusion of the real and the fictitious is the ongoing negotiation of different perspectives, also with the audience. It is impossible to think about moving and movement, about identity, shame, growing up and growing older and not think in terms of the body. In an intertwinement of manifold experiences, images, and topics, some of them individual and specific and some shared by all the performers, the sense of time is revealed through the body. When five bodies inhabit a space, it may resound with old themes, yet there are always new ones arising. Ageing is always fresh, there is always a need to blow off another layer of dust, undo the wrapping concealing excessive invisibilities… When a part of an identity is gone, the period of mourning commences.
If for An Old Woman in Mina Loy’s poem the past has come apart, the future is a seedless pot and the present pain, the makers of this performance remain upbeat when faced with the challenges of life. Life cannot be framed, but performance can be. In their new creation, they are interested in where to find the visible traces and if today – in the 21st century – it is possible to have a funny ending.
